The teachers listed below have choosen to post their information at yogateacher.org. This does not imply that we endorse them. To assure that a teacher is qualified, you may wish to ask them for references and look at their credentials. There are two common credentials found in the Yoga community in the USA today: the "CYT" (Certified Yoga teacher); and the "RYT" (Registered Yoga Teacher). Our experience has shown us that there are many excellent Yoga teachers who have no credentials, and that their are many credentialed teachers who do not teach very well. Even so, we support the Yoga communities efforts to set standards and improve teacher training. We suggest looking for teachers with an "RYT".

  • "CYT" (certified Yoga Teacher) indicates that the teacher has received a teaching certification from a Yoga School. This alone does is not a guarentee of quality, as their are both excellent and poor quality schools. However, if someone has a certificate, you can do some research on the school that they studied at.
  • "RYT" indicates that a teacher has choosen to REGISTER with the Yoga Alliance (YA). This means that the YA has done much of the research for you, on both the teacher and school that trained them. The YA registers both individual Yoga teachers and Yoga Teacher Training programs that have successfully demonstrated compliance with the educational standards established by the YA organization. A teacher only gets the "RYT" mark if they choose to register with the YA, and some choose not to do this because of the yearly fees or philosphical differences with YA. Almost all teachers that have an "RYT" also have a "CYT" from a Yoga teacher training school, unless the teacher has completed a comprehensive independent study, or received a "grandfather" from the YA if they had been teaching for many years prior to the establishment of the YA. There are two levels of RYT, one for teachers that have been certified by a school that provides at least 200 hours of training, and one for schools that provide 500 hours of training.
  • "RYS" is a Yoga Teacher Training School that has applied for and become registered with YA. Remember, the YA does NOT certify teachers. It REGISTERS teachers that have received certification from REGISTERED Yoga Teacher Training Schools. Yoga Teacher Training Schools must submit their curriculum and qualifications of their faculty for review, and pay a fee.

yogateacher.org provides training and certification to our Yoga teacher trainees and supports Yoga teachers from any tradition who wish to work with us. We have been training Yoga teachers since 1983. Our Yoga teacher training program is pending registration with Yoga Alliance.
